Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander Equal Pay Day

august 28, 2024

  • 60 cents for “all earners” (full-time year-round + part-time and part-year)

  • 66 cents for full-time, year-round earners

On this day, we will be joining with our friends, Empowering Pacific Islander Communities (EPIC) and National Asian Pacific American Women's Forum (NAPAWF) for a social media storm on August 30 at 2pm RT/11am PT to raise awareness of how NHPI women experience the wage gap and how they are often rendered invisible in mainstream conversations about it.

Please check out the toolkit for calls to action and policy solutions -- some include the Paycheck Fairness Act and urging the White House to direct the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to require all federal agencies to collect, analyze, and share public disaggregated information about the NHPI community.

The biggest wage gaps experienced by NHPI women are hidden in data that aggregates AANHPI people together. For every dollar earned by white, non-Hispanic men working full time, year-round in 2021, NHPI women, working full-time, year-round only earned 65 cents. However, for all NHPI women earners (full-time, part-time, and part-year), they bring home on average 61 cents for every dollar earned by their white, non-Hispanic male counterparts.

The pay gap can only be addressed if we have full information on how it impacts all Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities. Information about each ethnicity subgroup should be collected and reported so that NHPI experiences aren’t ignored. Like the wage gaps for all women, even when controlling for factors such as education and experience, the pay gaps persist and start early in women’s careers and contribute to a wealth gap that follows them throughout their lifetimes.
